The start of something

Clarkfield is by far the project that I've spent the most time on. Most of what I learned and applied for Marred Airship came from my experience on Clarkfield.

On Clarkfield, I work in nearly completely equal collaboration with Calvin. If you hear anything at all (instruments, production, anything at all) on a Clarkfield album, me and Calvin were both involved with it in some way.

I primarily write all the drum and guitar parts, whereas Calvin primarily writes the basslines and sings. We both like to switch places all the time, though, and we each always give input on everything the other writes.

Our first album, The War Against Peace was... a little embarassing, in hindsight. Calvin still likes the album, and I think it has some redeeming qualities, but overall my opinion of it is mixed. I think we did pretty good with the lyrics, and most of the instrumentals are pretty good, but the production isn't as good as it could have been, and the vocals are pretty bad in hindsight. The way I look at it now, this was mostly us proving that we could write music, and everything after was us proving we could do it well. We were also very limited by our little knowledge at the time of how music is even made... the entire album was recorded, produced, and mastered in AUDACITY. y'know... the FOSS audio EDITING software that has just about 0 music features. And is a pain to use. Hopefully Audacity 4 is good, though! It looks like it will be phenomenal. Either way, The War Against Peace was impressive for what it was, but in the grand scheme of things I don't look back at the album very fondly.

With our second album, Limbo, I don't feel this way whatsoever. Maybe it's a little rough around the edges, but Limbo ended up being a pretty stellar album all around. We didn't do quite as good on the lyrics, but the production is a massive improvement, the songwriting is a step up, the performances are even better... It's just a way better album. I'll find myself occasionally listening to it to see if it's as good as I remember. And, yeah, it's a great album. We nailed it. I think it's not as commerciable as what we've got in the works now, but it's good in other ways. Interestingly, me and Calvin were pretty sure that Moonlight would be one of the worse songs on the album, but when we showed Limbo to people, it ended up being everyone's favorite. Strange how that works out.

What's next for Clarkfield is... a suprise, of course, but I believe this next album we've got going has stellar potential. Not only commercially, but narratively-- we've written a proper storyline to follow, but you don't need the entire loredump just to appreciate the album in a vacuum. I'm excited for what we'll do with it. No more spoilers though.
